Projects & Shared Configuration

Learn how to organize applications, share environment variables across services, and manage project-wide domains in TurboV.

1. What is a Project?

In TurboV, a Project is a logical workspace that groups related applications, managed databases, and infrastructure resources together.

For example, a typical project named E-Commerce Platform might contain:

  • A Next.js customer-facing storefront (web).
  • A backend API service (api).
  • A background order fulfillment worker (worker).
  • A shared managed PostgreSQL database (db-postgres).
  • A shared Redis cache instance (cache-redis).

Projects allow your team to manage microservices and full-stack architectures as unified systems rather than disjointed containers.

2. Shared Project Environment Variables

Many microservices share common configuration keys (such as APP_ENV, SENTRY_DSN, SUPPORT_EMAIL, or third-party API credentials). Instead of re-entering these variables in every individual application, you can define Project-Level Environment Variables:

  1. Open your project in the dashboard and navigate to the Environment Variables tab.
  2. Click Add Variable.
  3. Specify the Key and Value (e.g. SHARED_AUTH_DOMAIN="auth.company.com").
  4. Click Save.

How Shared Variables Propagate

  • Automatic Inheritance: Every application deployed within the project automatically inherits project-level environment variables at runtime.
  • Application Overrides: If a specific application defines the same variable key locally, the application-level value takes precedence.
  • Encrypted at Rest: Like application variables, project-level secrets are encrypted with AES-256-GCM envelope encryption.

3. Project Domains & Routing

Under the project Domains tab, you can view and manage all apex domains and subdomains assigned across your applications:

  • Global Domain Overview: Quickly see which application and environment is serving api.domain.com, admin.domain.com, and www.domain.com.
  • Conflict Prevention: TurboV prevents accidentally assigning duplicate hostnames across different applications within the same project.
  • SSL Certificate Status: Monitor Let's Encrypt certificate health across all project routes from a single view.

4. Managing Project Databases & Services

Within the project overview:

  • Project Apps: View live statuses (RUNNING, BUILDING, STOPPED), recent deployment commit hashes, and quick-action controls.
  • Project Databases: Monitor all active database engines linked to the project, inspect resource usage, and access Database Studio with one click.
